I’m often asked, ‘does AdWords work?’ and the short answer is emphatically yes! It may not work for every business, but it works for all of our clients. We’ve worked with a range of companies in varying sectors, both B2B and B2C companies offering both products and services.

Often a company will approach us and say that AdWords is not working for them and the first question I ask is ‘did you set it up yourself?’. When companies without an in-house PPC specialist set up AdWords themselves, more often than not, they don’t have the knowledge and resources to set up and manage their AdWords account. Often the account is neglected and sometimes it’s  a case of ‘set it and forget it’, which isn’t the best approach.

Without proper research and insightful campaign set up by a professional AdWords Consultant, campaigns have a higher risk of being unsuccessful – there are many pitfalls in AdWords for the inexperienced. For example, I reviewed an account recently that was triggering ads for completely irrelevant search queries, leading to about 60% irrelevant clicks. It can be expensive to set it up yourself!

When set up correctly, AdWords really does work. It takes work though and continued optimisation to refine and feedback analysis into the campaigns.

Points to remember to ensure that your AdWords campaign is successful:

  • Set goals for what you are aiming to achieve
  • Set a daily budget that you are comfortable with and is in line with your goals
  • Ensure measurement is in place, such as Google Analytics and AdWords conversion tracking, so that interactions are measured – this ensures that you can calculate return on your ad spend
  • Have a professional AdWords expert set up your campaigns, so that highly targeted traffic is driven to your site and wasted spend minimised – using a good AdWords specialist will pay for itself in the long term
  • AdWords rewards relevance and it is imperative that you stucture your account well and choose relevant keywords and couple these with well thought out ad copy that speaks to your audience
  • If you do decide to set up campaigns yourself, ensure you read up on AdWords at the AdWords Help Centre

So, does Google AdWords work? Yes! AdWords really works if set up in the right way.
